The Collegiate Church of Santa Maria in Provenzano

Introduction

Welcome to the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria in Provenzano, where a terracotta bust of the Blessed Virgin Mary is venerated. The church was built in the early years of the seventeenth century around this miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary, thanks also to the wishes of the Medici family in Florence. The Collegiate Church, today lovingly cared for and used by the parish community, has become for the people of Siena the second most important place of worship after the Cathedral. Devotion to the Madonna of Provenzano gave rise to the July 2nd Palio, the race run in Piazza del Campo.
