The Basilica of St Francis
Saint Francis and Saint Andrew
The following painting, created in 1605 by
Pietro Sorri for the Piccolomini Chapel, depicts the Blessing Christ and Virgin surrounded by angels in the higher part, while at the bottom there are Saint Francis of Assisi and St. Andrew the Apostle, behind whom we can see the characteristic x-shaped cross, the instrument of his martyrdom. The lady who commissioned the painting is depicted in the bottom left corner, with her hands joined together, as she prays to the Saints who become her intermediaries with the Blessed Virgin who, in turn, intercedes for them with her Son.
